π Complete Credit Guide
What is credit utilization and why does it matter so much?
Credit utilization is how much of your available credit you are using. If your credit card limit is $1,000 and your balance is $300, your utilization is 30%. Utilization makes up 30% of your credit score. Keep utilization below 30% for a good score and below 10% for an excellent score. Pay your balance multiple times per month if needed. Requesting a credit limit increase also improves utilization without spending more.
What is the difference between a hard and soft credit inquiry?
A hard inquiry happens when you apply for credit (credit card, loan, mortgage). It temporarily lowers your score by 5-10 points and stays on your report for 2 years. Multiple hard inquiries in a short period for the same type of loan (like shopping for a mortgage) count as one inquiry if done within 14-45 days. A soft inquiry happens when you check your own score or when lenders pre-screen you for offers. Soft inquiries do NOT affect your score.
How long do negative items stay on my credit report?
Late payments: 7 years. Collections accounts: 7 years. Chapter 7 bankruptcy: 10 years. Chapter 13 bankruptcy: 7 years. Hard inquiries: 2 years. Paid off debts: 7-10 years (but show as paid, which helps). Accounts in good standing: 10 years after closing. The older the negative item, the less it affects your score. Time is one of the best credit repair tools.
What is a secured credit card?
A secured credit card requires a cash deposit that becomes your credit limit. You deposit $200-$500 and get a card with that limit. It works exactly like a regular credit card β use it, get a statement, pay the bill. After 6-12 months of on-time payments many banks upgrade you to an unsecured card and return your deposit. Best secured cards for building credit: Discover it Secured, Capital One Secured, Chime Credit Builder.
What is a credit freeze and when should I use it?
A credit freeze (also called security freeze) prevents lenders from accessing your credit report, making it impossible for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name. It is completely free to freeze and unfreeze at all three bureaus (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion). Freezing does not affect your score. If you are not actively applying for credit, freezing your credit is one of the best identity protection steps you can take.
